Instead Of Reaching For Your Phone When You Wake Up, Try This

Personal Development

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

I used to immediately reach for my phone, but I’ve started to purposefully avoid it for at least the first hour of my day.

Although it’s only been a couple of days, I’m already seeing what a difference it makes. I’m more energized and productive. And I feel like I’m starting my day off on the right foot.

I’ve made a few changes to my morning routine. You have to replace bad habits with good ones. So here are a few tips on how you too can update your morning routine, feel more alert, and be ready to start the day.

1. Read

Rather than going straight for my phone, I’ve been opting to grab a book instead. I’ve been reading a few pages of The Art of War every morning as I brush my teeth. Not only am I able to squeeze in that extra reading time, but it also helps me to stimulate my mind and feel more awake.

2. Write

Those moments when you’ve just woken up can be full of creative inspiration. It’s best to write down your dreams and ideas while they’re still fresh in your mind. Create a practice of writing down thoughts about the previous day and take the time to jot down your plans and intentions for the day ahead.

3. Exercise

One of my favorite forms of exercise is running. Whether you choose running, weightlifting, walking, or yoga, find a way to get your body moving. Exercising helps you to look good, feel good and it gives you the energy to start your day off right.

So what have I been getting out of this?

I feel awake quicker. You would think the bright light of the phone would do something to wake me up, but it never does. Without my phone, I feel less groggy and dazed. I find it so much easier to fully wake up and be present.

I’m more proactive instead of reactive. Another benefit of setting your phone aside is that you create time for yourself.

We’re always reacting to things throughout the day. There are near-constant distractions from our phones, emails, family, and friends. We have to stay on top of work and deadlines. People depend on us. However, it’s important that you make time for yourself every day, even if it’s just for a little while.

Instead of reacting to email or social media, focus on being proactive by setting yourself up to have a fantastic day. TC mark
